Treasury Sec. Timothy Geithner says he will be in his current job "for the foreseeable future."

This comes on the heels of rampant press reports in Washington that Geithner told the president he was considering stepping down from his powerful post.

But Treasury officials tell Fox News Geithner has not made a decision, "and doesn't plan to make any decisions while he's focused on the work at hand, particularly negotiations on deficit reduction and the debt limit."

Geithner made the comments to former President Bill Clinton in Chicago Thursday evening while speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative meeting.

The Treasury secretary is the last remaining person in President Obama's original economic team and is one of the president's most trusted advisers. Those familiar with the stress of high-level, cabinet positions thinks Geithner recognizes there's a window in which he could bow out gracefully as secretary after a debt ceiling deal is brokered.

Austan Goolsbee, who is set to leave his post as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and counts himself as Geithner's "friend," said on CNBC that he's surprised to hear the rumors, but that his family would likely be behind any decision he makes. Geithner has a son in high school.

Former Utah Republican Governor John Huntsman's campaign says the presidential candidate collected $4.1 million 2nd quarter fundraising.

While that amount is in the same range as former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, Huntsman raised it in just 10 days. He announced his candidacy just last week in New Jersey.

Paul is a prolific online fundraiser and Pawlenty had the benefit of being in the race the entire quarter and thus, has had more time to raise money.

The defense rested today in the Casey Anthony trial, bringing to an end two weeks' worth of evidence presentation and witness testimony. It did so with the Anthony choosing not to take the stand.

The prosecution will now present a rebuttal case, but it is barely even expected to last a day. Closing arguments will follow, with jury deliberations possibly getting underway this holiday weekend.

If Casey is found guilty of killing her daughter, she could face be executed.

Stephen Colbert will not be our next President. But he may have a say who gets the job.

The comedian/talk show host won approval today from the Federal Election Committee to form a SuperPAC, meaning Colbert can raise money and produce/buy television time for political advertisements.

"Moments ago the Federal Election Committee made their ruling," Colbert said ta crown below outside the FEC headquarters. "And ladies and gentlemen I'm sorry to say, we won!"

Stephen Colbert Super PAC Announcement

How did this come about? Former FEC Chairman Robert Lenhard said the ruling "means people can use their network's resources to fund their own PAC ads without needing to report it on their network, on their show."

As for the host of The Colbert Report? Added Lenhard:

"I think he's going to have fun. But until he gets at least a million dollars he's not going to run many ads outside of his show."

Colbert is already working on that, however. He solicited donations from fans during his speech, telling supporters: "I don't know about you but I do not accept limits on my free speech, I don't know about you but I do not accept the status quo. But I do accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express."

Carney Tells Reporters They Shouldn’t be so Greedy in Their Questioning

President Obama speaks to members of the media in the East Room of the White House Tuesday, June 29, 2011. (FOX News Photo)The president took questions from 10 different reporters Tuesday during his news conference, but press secretary Jay Carney says it could have been a whole lot more if reporters would learn to limit their questions to just one.

"The president can answer, let's say, 15 questions in an hour," Carney explained to reporters. "And he can either answer that many from eight people or from 15 people, depending on how people handle it when they get called on."

It all started in the White House briefing Wednesday when April Ryan of the American Urban Radio Networks made a passing remark that she got no love from President Obama in the form of a question yesterday.

"The president, in answers to questions from you..." Carney began answering Ryan when she asked him about critiques that Obama seemed frustrated.

"I didn't get a question," she quickly interrupted.

"[Y]ou might have, and a number of others might have if those that did ask questions, in general, kept to one question," Carney quipped to the laughter of the offending journalists.

During the approximately 65 minute news conference Tuesday, eight of the 10 questions included follow-ups, and only one question could really be considered a single question.

Some follow-ups were more extreme than others.

Chuck Todd of NBC, asked a question on the Constitutionality of not just the War Powers Resolution, but also the debt ceiling and gay marriage. He could accurately be described as trying to get his money's worth, because statistically it contained the most follow-ups and Obama spent about nine minutes answering.

As the second question of the news conference, it could have set the tone.

"Chuck's not here to defend himself!" shouted Fox News' Mike Emanuel to a chorus of laughter.

Joe Stangni Pulls an Anthony Weiner, Tweets Underwear Pic to Woman

Anthony Weiner likely wanted to set a good example for folks during his time in office. But we doubt this is what he had in mind,

Joe Stangni, a Louisiana Councilman, has been caught in a Twitter scandal after The New Orleans Times-Picayune published a photo he sent of himself in his underwear to a town employee.

Explained the politician after this picture leaked: "I had an inappropriate but consensual relationship with an adult female and we exchanged improper electronic communications which ended in 2009. I did not use any government computer or city issued equipment to send or receive these communications."

Joe Stangni Twit Pic

Following the guidelines of Famous Person Apology 101, Stangi invoked a Higher Power in his statement, adding:

"I asked for God's mercy and forgiveness. I apologized to my wife and family and asked for their forgiveness as well. My actions and bad judgment had nothing to do with my duties and responsibilities as a public official. They were private acts, but I take full responsibility for my irresponsible behavior. This matter has been a painful experience for my family and I pray that everyone will allow our family to continue to heal. I am sorry."

The most embarrassing part of all this? At least Weiner had something to show off.

A man named Justin John Bieber is creating quite the stir on Facebook for two reasons:

  1. His name.
  2. The fact that he goes off on Justin Bieber.

FB Profile

A 50-year old man, this Justin Bieber feels as attached to his name as Michael Bolton did on Office Space: he was here first, he thinks the other Justin Bieber is a "punk ass little bandit" and he has no intention of changing it!

We don't approve of some of Justin John's language or reference, but it's better to see a middle-aged man turning away "little girls" than trying to friend them, isn't it?

White House Says Halperin was Inappropriate, Calls MSNBC

A few hours after MSNBC political analyst and editor-at large for Time magazine, Mark Halperin, referred to President Obama as a part of the male body, the White House chief spokesman said it was completely out of line.

"The comment that was made was inappropriate," Jay Carney told a reporter who, oddly enough, was actually sitting in Time's seat in the White House briefing room. "It would be inappropriate to say that about any president of either party."

During a discussion on "Morning Joe" about the president's Tuesday news conference with reporters, Halperin warned hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski that he had something to add that might call for use of the network's ability to delay things said live by seven seconds.

"Yeah, sure, come on, take a chance," Scarborough said to Halperin. "Have faith."

"Let's see what happens," Brzezinski sort of egged on.

So Halperin dropped it.

"I thought he was kind of a d--- yesterday."

Woops.

Carney, who used to work for Time as the magazine's White House correspondent, was not impressed.

"[O]n behalf of the White House I expressed that sentiment to executives at the network," he said.

That, no doubt, played into MSNBC's decision to indefinitely suspend Halperin, even though Carney said that was not his goal.

"We just expressed our concern about the inappropriateness of the comment."

Schumer: GOP Opposing Economic Recovery for Political Gains

The third-ranking Democrat in the Senate, Charles Schumer of New York, accused Republicans in Congress of working to undermine an economic recovery Thursday. Schumer asserted in an address to the Economic Policy Institute that the Republican fiscal approach of "cut, cut, cut" has undermined the nation's attempt at a financial rebound, and he charged that doing so is central to the GOP's long-term strategy.

"Insisting on a slash-and-burn approach may be part of this plan," Schumer said, "it is ideologically tidy and it undermines the economic recovery, which they think only helps them in 2012." Adding, "They are opposing the economic recovery itself - and all that means for America's working and middle class families."

Republicans believe that the nation's sluggish economic recovery is due to a massive federal budget deficit, and that the best way to narrow the gap between what the government takes in and spends is through spending cuts. They add that reducing the budget deficit will help grow the economy.

The office of Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said that viewpoint has bipartisan support. "The president said yesterday that lowering the deficit would help the economy," said McConnell spokesman Don Stewart, "According to the president, what we are doing helps the economy."

Schumer noted that in the ongoing debate over raising the nation's debt ceiling, the Democrats have pushed to repeal a host of tax loopholes for corporations and the wealthy, a move Republicans have rejected so far. The New York Democrat did not say how much revenue his party expected to raise through a repeal of the tax incentives, nor would he say that Democrats would refuse a deal that didn't include new sources of revenue.

Republicans insist that any debt deal cannot include a tax increase.

Schumer predicted that in the end, a party rooting for economic failure would feel the nation's wrath. "If the public comes to believe that Republicans are deliberately sabotaging the economy, it will backfire politically," Schumer said.

Mark Halperin must be watching too much Tracy Morgan stand-up.

During a live appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe today, the political analyst was asked about President Obama's behavior yesterday during a meeting with Republicans, inquired about whether or not the show was on a seven-second delay and then said:

The President "acted like a dick." Watch the host's stunned reaction to the insult now:

Mark Halperin on Morning Joe

Halperin, who co-authored the book "Game Change," has been suspended indefinitely by the network and said in a statement:

"I want to offer a heartfelt and profound apology to the president, to my MSNBC colleagues, and to the viewers. My remark was unacceptable, and I deeply regret it."

Should he have been punished?

Shia LaBeouf may come across as a sort of shady dirtball who kisses and tells. But an on-set source says this about the Transformers star:

He's not a liar.

Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox

Get a room, Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf. Wait, you allegedly already did!

Following the actor's admission that he slept with Megan Fox during shooting on the movie's sequel a couple years ago, an insider confirms to Us Weekly:

"Yes, Megan and Shia hooked up... I think they were drawn together because it was so ugly working on that film," adding that Fox was NOT dating Brian Austin Green at the time because "they had a 10-month break before getting back together."

This mole also says Fox was not fired from the franchise. She simply said "enough and quit."

President Barack Obama presents outgoing Defense Secretary Robert Gates with the Presidential Medal of Freedom during a farewell ceremony for Gates, Thursday, June 30, 2011, at the Pentagon. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)At a farewell ceremony on the Pentagon parade field Thursday, President Barack Obama honored outgoing Defense Secretary Robert Gates with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award the president can give a civilian.

Speaking in front of a number of active and retired military and civilian leaders, Obama turned to Gates and said, "this was not part of the program," before he announced the award.

Gates was noticeably surprised by the honor and when he stood to receive it he quipped, "We should all know by now you're getting pretty good at this covert ops stuff," -- a reference to the now infamous Bin Laden raid.

Obama recognized Gates for his unique service under two presidents, Democratic and Republican, while the nation was in the midst of two wars. He encouraged the rest of Washington to take note of the selfless manner in which Gates served, putting politics aside and his "nation first."

Obama thanked Gates for his 40 years in government and called him one the nation's finest public servants.

Among the many people Gates recognized for their contributions through his tenure, he saved the most important for last. He thanked his wife Becky for standing by his side since they met on a blind date 45 years ago in Bloomington, Indiana.

Secretary Gates and his wife will fly to their home in Washington state Thursday afternoon with a normal military escort and full communications. He will remain in the military's top civilian position until Leon Panetta is sworn in as the 23rd Secretary of Defense at 9:00 a.m. Friday in the Pentagon.

Gates has served in his role as secretary since December 18th, 2006 and will be the 4th longest serving defense secretary behind Robert McNamara, Caspar Weinberger and Donald H. Rumsfeld.

Lindsay Lohan had her ankle monitor removed and was released from house arrest around 10:20 a.m. Pacific Time yesterday.

Last night, she partied with friends at the Lexington Social House in Los Angeles. We're as shocked as you are: she didn't go there for a late breakfast?!?

Lindsay at a NightclubFailing to Hide

Lohan reportedly spent the evening with actors Emile Hirsch and Lyndsy Fonseca, barely making it out of the club without falling as she tried (and failed) to hide from a swarm of paparazzi.

It's nice to see this star getting back to what she does best, isn't it?

President Obama and the current Republican front-runner Mitt Romney will both campaign in Pennsylvania Thursday, in an attempt to raise some last minute cash on the final day of the fundraising quarter.

President Obama is scheduled to hold two DNC fundraisers in the Philadelphia area, the first, a public fundraiser with tickets ranging from $250 to $2,500. Later at the private home of Comcast executive David Cohen, the president attends a dinner with invitations starting at $10,000 per person.

Money from the president's fundraisers is split between the Democratic National Committee and the president's re-election campaign. The first $5,000 of individual contributions go to the campaign, the maximum any one person can contribute to the campaign. Individuals are permitted to give $30,800 to a campaign committee per year.

Former Governor Romney will campaign a few miles away, holding a press conference at Allentown Metal Works, a factory that has closed in the time since president Obama visited in 2009 to tout the federal stimulus. The stop at the former factory fits with Romney's campaign theme to bash the president's handling of economic issues.

Romney will also pick up some cash in the Keystone State. But his campaign is downplaying expectations for his fundraising.

Romney campaign officials tell Fox News the former governor will report raising less than $20 million for the quarter. Even below the $20 million benchmark, Romney is expected to lead the Republican candidates in fundraising.

The President is expected to surpass that benchmark, raising $60 million for his re-election campaign and the DNC combined this quarter, according to an Obama campaign source.

Pennsylvania will be a key swing state in next year's election. President Obama has visited there twice already since launching his re-election, and today will be his thirteenth visit as president.

The New York Police Department Needs To Re-Think Their Idea Of People Skills

Smif N Wessun, a rap group from Brooklyn, NY, was holding an album release party for Monumental (an album produced by the legendary rapper/producer Pete Rock) when the Les nightclub where the party was at was shut down by NYPD officers due to a fight that took place near it which they figured started inside in the club. Officers came in, shut it down, and left a bunch of the partygoers as well as the artists walking home with the police guiding them along as if they were a deadly mob out to cause havoc.

The video above, recorded by UK DJ Lady Diamond, showcases how out of control the situation became when the police used brute force to move folks along (you can see one attack after the 2:51 mark).

I initially wasn't interested in commenting on the situation. For one, I try to wait for the facts to come out before I make a judgement call. Secondly, if I make a judgement call without understanding the facts, I am no better than any other journalist out here who wants to put something out because it's hot in the news right now.

The thing that changed my mind, which you can see in this particular video, is the fact if force was needed (as I'm sure the NYPD cops will claim) then why did they need several officers to subdue one person? Obviously the guy the cops knocked to the ground wasn't armed; what kind of sense does that make to take a man down when he clearly isn't a threat or has nothing on him that would make him a threat?

I believe the New York City Police Department, like any police department, has it's share cops that are good as well as cops that are bad. I also believe that the department would have a better reputation if they could figure out how to tone down the "I'm the law" motto they wear in their actions and figure out more thoughtful ways of handling the general public. Really this could all be attributed to a quote that I heard once about great power coming with great responsibility.

When you shut down a party, which is designed for people to forget their troubles and celebrate, you can't expect the people within the party to have a particularly good mood. The cops of New York City should have understood that. They didn't.

Lawsuits will be coming soon as a result, and I imagine the average New York police officer isn't going to feel all that good about suiting up for the new few days. I feel sorry for the ones who had nothing to do with this ugly set of circumstances. The fact of the matter is that the officers of New York have to hold each other accountable for the other's actions. If one cop or several take the law into their own hands, other cops will suffer.

(There are apparently other videos out that showcase different angles of the same situation, but I haven't found one that accurately showcases the whole thing back to front. I am only putting DJ Lady Diamond's video up because her video showcased some of the action on ground level. If anyone has any video on ground level that isn't always changing camera angles, please send me an email at mmilam@matthewmilam.com)

Chicago public schools have been cutting a lot of academic programs from their curriculum due to lack of funding. A lot of these programs are in the arts and culture study of our kids schools. Programs such as physical education, art studies and music have all been cut substantially. As a parent, I felt that this should not be happening. I would like my child to learn arts and culture. Especially music.

Music is an essential part of everyone's lives, especially kids. As babies, music tends to flow through them naturally. From making noises with their mouths to playing with a toy that has the ability to make sounds, babies are making music whether it's understandable or not. As babies grow and develop, so do their ability to comprehend music. I strongly believe that music is essential to everyone and to back my opinion that music is essential in everyone's lives, I will reference a certain children's television show. This show is down a street.

Down Sesame street you can see all sorts of characters. A ten foot tall bird, an oversized wooly mammoth, a counting Count, a furry red guy and more. From the time you step on that street, music begins. Uplifting and invitingly, it insists on having you take a trip down this lovely street. Convincingly, it works. Throughout the show, many characters sing songs and play instruments. Do you see my point?

Kids and adults all over the world are moved by music. Here in Chicago, we know very well what music means to us. From yearly festivals such as Lollapalooza and North coast music festival to summer fest that host their own musical acts, we in Chicago love our music. Many of the musicians that are in these festivals learned music through some school or institution. So you see how important it is to have musical classes in Chicago public schools?

Michael Carter knew about the importance of music in people's lives. With a great team behind him, Michael and team created the Chicago Academy of Music. Imagine a place where your child or teen can go after school to spend his few free hours learning music. I know what you're thinking. Those types of places cost money but, one particular place doesn't. And you don't have to Imagine anymore. This place already exist.

Located on the south side of the city of Chicago there is a building there. This building sits there unoccupied. You can't tear it down because it's a historical landmark but you can occupy it. Over 100,000 sq. ft. sit here and the Chicago Academy of Music will occupy about 50,000sq. ft Thanks to Michael and the Chicago Academy of Music, the buiding is going to be occupied by an organization that will change your community.

Help your city welcome this new organization by telling your friend about it. They are currently seeking donations to help fund and manage the school. Visit www.chicagoacademyofmusic.org for more information. As always, you can email me here for more information on donations and what you can do to help.

Cubs may still be able to trade Aramis Ramirez

Apparently, Ramirez's contract isn't so prohibitive when it comes to trades after all.

Well, except for the No Trade Clause he has yet to waive.

It's been widely discussed that Ramirez's contract includes a club option that would automatically be exercised if he were to be traded.

Not so, according to Bruce Levine of ESPN and Cot's Baseball Contracts.

a-ram standing.jpg

The only money Ramirez gets in the event of a trade is $1M to help with moving expenses.  That's quite a move if you ask me.  Still, it's quite affordable by any MLB team willing to pick up what's left of his salary.  And it's possible the Cubs would help out with some money as well.

Now, assuming that's out of the way and that Ramirez, like Derrek Lee last year, will change his mind and waive his NTC.  Is he worth trading?  And who would want him?  What could we get?

According to MLB Trade Rumors, the following teams may be in the market for a 3rd baseman

  • Cleveland Indians
  • Detroit Tigers
  • Chicago White Sox
  • Minnesota Twins
  • Seattle Mariners
  • Milwaukee Brewers
  • St. Louis Cardinals
  • Pittsburgh Pirates
That's a pretty big market and it's unlikely the Cubs will retain Ramirez unless he's willing to come back at a greatly reduced salary, but with few good 3rd baseman headed for free agencey, Ramirez should be able to do better than what the Cubs would offer him.

Ramirez will likely be a type B free agent this year, meaning the Cubs or any other team would be given a compensation draft pick(s) if they offered him arbitration.  That alone makes him worth at least one good prospect.  Add his value as a solid veteran rental down the stretch and the Cubs may be able to get a couple of prospects for him.

Now...about that trade clause...

Jim Hendry says "No Fire Sale" for Cubs...and is he here to stay?

According to Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald, Jim Hendry says there will be no fire sale.

I read some things that people assume,"
Hendry said. "They use the word 'fire sale.' That's not going to happen. We're not interested in trading people at all that will be valuable to us moving forward. People like to float names of your better players, which makes no sense to trade. If we make moves, it will be designed to make us better for the future, and we still want see how we play the next month or so. Everybody thinks there's this big, automatic, 'You have to be a buyer or a seller or it's fire-sale time.' Well, we've got a lot of young people out there pitching and playing or some people who will be very productive for us a year from now that when you get ready to put together a team in the off-season, you certainly don't want to start out without them anyhow...We're certainly going to hold on to the people, no matter what, we feel will be major contributors down the road."

So those ideas about trading Soto or Marmol?  You can probably throw them out the window.  I think that's unfortunate as it appears the Cubs will try to build on the fly -- but for those hoping that the Cubs would go after a couple of free agents, this is probably a good sign.  It indicates to me that anybody under contract will stay, and that could mean the Cubs are going to try and present themselves as a team a couple of pieces away from competing this offseason.

He also doesn't sound like a guy who's about to lose his job.  He's talking about not trading anyone who will help us in the future, as if he'll be part of that future.  There's a lot of speculation on Hendry's fate, but other than an occasional rumor, I haven't heard anything that convinces me he'll be fired.  If that's Ricketts' plan, he hasn't tipped his hand at all -- even Hendry seems to assume he'll be here.

It will be interesting to watch...

The Fire have announced that midfielder Davis Paul has been waived.  Non guaranteed MLS contracts can be released before July 1 giving teams maneuverability with their rosters and salary budget.  Players on the roster after July 1 are guaranteed compensation for the remainder of 2011.

The release of Paul, who appeared in one match this season leaves the Fire with 27 players on the roster. Three below the maximum limit of 30 with one international spot available.  It would seem that something is afoot as the opening of the July transfer window approaches.

Romney Raises Less than $20 Million in Second Quarter

(AP)Senior Romney Campaign officials tell FOX News that when they file their fundraising paperwork, due by midnight June 30, it will show the GOP presidential frontrunner brought in "less than $20million."

These Romney Aides assure FOX News they are not playing the traditional ‘expectations game' by saying the number will be less than $20 million now, only to announce within the next few days that they actually broke that barrier.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's latest fundraising number, which will most likely be leaked in the coming days, is widely expected to lead the GOP presidential pack. So, at this juncture, Mr. Romney is in some ways competing more against himself, former frontrunners and nominees, than he is the current crop of rivals.

It is also useful to remember that money alone does not win elections, just look at Meg Whitman, the 2010 California Republican gubernatorial candidate who spent over $140 million of her own money in a losing effort.

However, good fundraising is always seen as an early sign of organizational strength and energy within a campaign.

By this time in the 2008 presidential cycle most of the candidates had been in the race and raising money for considerably longer, meaning this was their second active quarter of fundraising. Whereas, here in the 2012 cycle, the second quarter is really the first test of active fundraising.

By way of comparison:

In 2007 the eventual Republican Presidential nominee Senator John McCain raised $11.6 million, while Romney himself raised just under $21million. However back then that number also included the millions of dollars Romney was infusing his campaign from his own personal fortune. By June 30 of 2008 Romney had poured just under $9 million of his own money into the race, by contrast aides tell us the candidate has spent none of his own money on the campaign this time around... So far.

On the Democratic side Senator Hillary Clinton raised $27 million during the second quarter of 2007, while the eventual nominee, President Barak Obama raised $33 million.

Back in the 2000 presidential cycle , eventual Republican nominee, President George W. Bush raised over $29.5 million during the second quarter of 1999.

Don't worry, fans: Justin Bieber won't be promoting perfume forever.

The singer is already planning his next album, although it's unlikely to hit stores any time soon. In an interview with MTV, Justin said of the eventual CD:

"I want to] write a lot myself. I will be working with a lot of other producers and stuff like that, but I'm just writing a lot, writing on tour."

Greetings, Justin Bieber

Fans have plenty of options to listen to until Bieber does take over the charts with his next release, of course. He's already come out with (deep breath...) My World, My World 2.0, Never Say Never - The Remixes and My Worlds Acoustic.

Expect to hear more of the latter down the road.

"I've done a lot on my acoustic guitar, so it's gonna have that vibe. I'm not gonna really limit myself... I know there's country music, there's rock music, but my music is different. My voice is not meant for any style. I just want to make music."

Should we bother to ask: Are you excited for a new album from Justin Bieber?

Lee Smith, Tom Ricketts to attend Citi Cubs Kids Program this week

Maybe the Cubs aren't doing so well on the field this year but off the field has been a different story.  Kudos to Cubs legend Lee Smith and and owner Tom Ricketts for supporting education initiatives in our city as part of this week's guests for the Citi Cubs Kids program.

lee smith.jpg
Most of us remember Lee Smith for his intimidating presence on the mound.  I remember his huge 6'5" frame, and how he used to lumber out of that bullpen with that slow gait.  It's as if he knew it gave hitters more time to worry about what was coming.  And what was coming was a 100 mph fastball that came out of a 3/4 motion that had big league hitters bailing out halfway out of the batters box.  He finished his career with 478 saves and perhaps had his best season in 1983 when he had 29 saves and a 1.65 ERA.

Tom Ricketts, meanwhile, is best known as the man with the tall task of bringing a World Series title to Chicago, but he's also someone who gives a lot of his time to important causes like this one.

They will both be guests when Citi will resume its 2011 Citi Cubs Kids season with back-to-back programs just prior to the Cubs hosting the World Champion San Francisco Giants at Wrigley Field on Wednesday, June 29, and Thursday, June 30.  Both programs will be held at The Inter-American Magnet School (851 W. Waveland Ave, Chicago, IL), and former Cubs legend Lee Smith and team Chairman and Owner Tom Ricketts will be guest speakers.

In its second season, Citi Cubs Kids is an educational and motivational community-based initiative for Chicago students, developed by Citi in collaboration with the Jackie Robinson Foundation and the Cubs.
citikids.jpg

"The Cubs are dedicated to playing an active role in the community and this partnership with Citi is an excellent way to help impact the lives of kids in Chicago," said Wally Hayward, Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer of the Chicago Cubs. "Citi Cubs Kids reinforces positive values in Chicago's youth by offering personal interaction with role models who overcame challenges on their paths to success."In addition to Lee Smith, guest speakers on Wednesday will include Mr. Gourley, Managing Director of Citi Private Bank, and Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholar Inez Jones.

Participating in Citi Cubs Kids on Wednesday are students from Jensen Academy and Chicago's Housing Authority.

On Thursday, guest speakers will include Mr. Ricketts, Mr. Gourley and Ms. Jones, and program participants will include students from Chicago Housing Authority and Mercy Housing.

As I've said in the past, we too often hear about athletes and other public figures when they make mistakes or get into trouble, and we don't often hear when they give back to the communities that continue to be a big part of their success.  Lee Smith and Tom Ricketts are positive role models and they deserve mention for the good they're doing off the field while our Cubs trying to find their way around on it.

Three year of blissful dating came to an end last week, as Lauren Conrad and Kyle Howard shocked the celebrity gossip world by breaking up.

What happened?!?

"He saw the relationship as distracting from his goal of being the next Robert De Niro," an insider says in the latest issue of Us Weekly. "He wasn't supportive of her career."

With an upcoming role on Royal Pains, and a critically-beloved turn on My Boys, Howard does have a bright acting career in front of him. He reportedly felt like LC's reality star roots weren't an appropriate fit.

"All of her friends can count on one hand the amount of times they've seen him," said a source, adding that "Lauren is heartbroken... She wants to be married and have kids."

Countess LuAnn de Lesseps Release Music Video for "Chic C'est La Vie," World Groans

We really shouldn't post this story under our "music" tag.

But Countess LuAnn de Lesseps has released the official video for "Chic C'est La Vie," the track she hopes will ratchet up her non-existent singing career.

The Countess received help from from Real Housewives of New York castmates Jill Zarin and Kelly Bensimon, but couldn't believe they were the only ones to volunteer.

“It was very disappointing that the other ladies wouldn’t be part of it. The other girls didn’t come, they didn’t think it was appropriate. I didn’t want anyone to feel like they were being excluded so I invited everyone. And let’s face it, I sing about them in the song."

The term "sing" is used VERY loosely, as you can see/listen to here:

Chew on This: Gluten Free Chewing Gums

Just the sight of it in my son's room reminds me of my ponytail softball days. Who didn't enjoy sticking a huge wad of Big League Chew in their mouth as a kid and chomping away until saliva almost starts dribbling down your chin? As an adult looking for fresh breath after a meal it is not my first chewing gum choice, but I am happy that my son (who is gluten free) can enjoy its shredded chewiness to his heart's content.

When toothbrush and toothpaste are not nearby, chewing on fresh mint, clove (natural options), or a stick of gum can be a good replacement. There is some controversy amongst online newsgroups as to which varieties of chewing gum are gluten free. People have commented about various flavors and varieties causing them abdominal distress. Most chewing gums do contain phenylalenine which is an ingredient in Aspartame and can cause some side effects in people, stomach upset being one of them.

To help get clarification, I went directly to the source and contact various gum manufacturers as to whether or not their chewing gum is gluten free. Here is a list of various brands that are gluten free:

Wrigley manufactures the following brands which are all gluten free.
  • Orbit brand (all flavors)
  • 5 gum (all flavors)
  • Juicy Fruit
  • Big Red
  • Extra (all flavors)
  • Eclipse gum (all flavors)
  • Freedent
  • Spearmint
Kraft acquired Cadbury Adams in February 2010 and now manufactures the following chewing gum brands. Kraft always labels ingredients as well as any potential for cross-contamination.
  • Bubbilicious
  • Chicklets
  • Dentyne
  • Stride
  • Trident (all flavors)
Hershey's manufactures Bubble Yum chewing gum in six flavors. While they do not maintain a list of gluten free products, they do not use gluten in any of their artificial flavors and will call out any gluten ingredients or gluten-derived ingredients right on the label.

And last but not least, all flavors of Big League Chew are gluten free. Prior to January 2011, Big League Chew was manufactured by Wrigley. It is now manufactured by Ford Gum company. They also manufacture many of the bulk gumballs that appear in vending machines nationwide and are gluten free as well.
