A chance encounter while rehabbing my shoulder enabled me to meet someone who played in the early days of professional basketball.Richard "Dick" Triptow, a product of Lane Tech High School and DePaul University in Chicago played professionally from 1944-1949. One of his teammates in college, and again in the 1947 season was the great George Mikan, who set the standard for big man play, well before Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain were household names.
He also enjoyed a long career as a coach at the high school and college level, finishing up at Lake Forest High School, in the northern suburbs, where the 89 years young Triptow still resides. He is a member of the Illinois coaches Hall of Fame.
Being the sports history buff that I am, I arranged a meeting with Triptow, and brought along our summer intern. He regaled us with some great stories of playing for a young Ray Meyer, working in a factory as part of his first professional contract, and barnstorming around the country with other basketball pros. He played games against the Harlem Globetrotters. One of the team owners he played for was so eccentric, and didn't get along with the other league owners, that he started his own private pro basketball league.
All in all it was a fascinating morning, and Steve the intern documented it all, He will be working on a much more in depth story, that will appear in one of our sister publications.
