It was a sunny day with temperatures in the 70's; perfect weather for the Chicago Gay Pride Parade this year!  The streets on Halsted and Broadway were lined with onlookers who were as colorful as the people in the parade.  This was a time for all GLBT to celebrate their lives.

It was a day where police ignored open drinking and scantily clothed bodies in high heels.  The streets were filled with people of all ages all trying to get a good spot behind the barricades for the parade.

Politicians, corporations, City/State agencies and not-for-profits were well represented, with many dressed in stilettos, purple wigs and bikinis.  The floats were opulent, the music loud with a heavy bass and the participants were smiling and waving to a crowd of thousands.

The Gay Pride Parade has become "the" place to be seen as it has transformed itself into a mainstream event.  Babies, dogs, and children lined the streets next to young partying GLBT's.  The policitans, whether they were gay or not, worked the crowd looking for acceptance (votes) from the gay community.

I remember when there were few politicians and corporations in this parade.  Nineteen years ago when I went I first went to the Gay Pride Parade, it was largely filled with gay rights endorsers.  Politicians, like Maria Pappas who twirled her Baton came, as did Jesse White and Jesse Jackson, Jr.

No more.  The acceptance of GLBT into our society has come a long way. With the recent passage of civil unions in Illinois, our state is supporting and encouraging freedom to celebrate our alternative lifestyles.

Congratulations to the GLBT community on their successful parade.  It was a day to remember!
