So I guess the other Cubs beat writers didn't think the orginizational meetings being held this upcoming week were such a big deal.
Paul Sullivan and Gordon Wittenmyer both downplayed Bruce Levine's report, saying it's normal happenstance for this time of the year. I continue to believe that this meeting will be a page turner for the Cubs.
They have to know it's time to move some people and get a look at the likes of a Brett Jackson.
Wittenmyer says the Cubs are starting to get some feelers on Kosuke Fukudome. Sure, I could see that.
Fukudome has the highest OBP of any lead-off man (.397) and is owed about $6.5 million on his deal. That would be a good yearly salary if anything, but I could see teams taking the rest of the deal for a marginal prospect.
Bruce Miles points out that Fukudome and Carlos Pena are the only patient hitters on the club.
So why is this so important? Back in 2008, when the Cubs went to the playoffs for the last time, they led the National League in walks, OBP, runs scored and, most important, wins.
This year, they're ninth in runs, ninth in OBP and dead last in walks by a wide margin. Couple that with their pitchers being last in ERA, and you have a team on pace to lose 96 games.
Lastly, SI.com says the Cubs job is still the 10th best in baseball. Despite the fact the Twins have only fired one manager since 1986, and the Cubs have employed 24 managers in 40 years.
