After slow starts, Cubs prospects Tyler Colvin and Welington Castillo are raking at AAA Iowa. The Cubs are fading quickly from the playoff chase and the trading deadline is just over a month away. So let's see what we have. Can these two players be a part of the Cubs 2012 plans?
Let's look at how the two are doing:
Wellington Castillo: .317/.370/.593 (.963 OPS)
Tyler Colvin: .292/.309/.607 (.915 OPS)
Would like to see a better OBP from Colvin but the Cubs could sure use a lefty power bat. Castillo is doing it all. The former free-swinger is even getting on base at very respectable rate of .370.
As much as I like Fukudome's OBP at the top of the order, he's a player with some value if the Cubs agree to pay part of his salary, and he's not this team's leadoff hitter of the future anyway. That distinction belongs to either Brett Jackson or Matt Sczcur.
And yes, we know that Colvin struggled early with the Cubs, but much of that has to do with moving him around in spring training --- much too much time working at first base and not enough work on his hitting. You'll remember this caused him to struggle with his OF defense as well early on. It's time to stick him in RF and leave him there.
He also had horrific luck. He had an almost unfathomable .116 BABIP before being sent down. This can't help but change. I think Colvin can hit double digit numbers in home runs and bat in the .250-.260 range in the second half if he's allowed to play. If not...well, then we'll know.
When it comes to Castillo, the Cubs may have more than they originally thought they did and with Geovanny Soto struggling, the Cubs should see if Castillo is a viable option as a future starter. If he is, then Soto becomes expendable. Despite his struggles, a solid two way catcher with good power and on-base skills will be in demand. Especially since he is still cost-controlled. He should bring in a nice haul if that's the direction the Cubs decide to go.
The Cubs need to start on their 2012 season ASAP, and I'm optimistic that will be the decision the Cubs brass comes up with after their meeting next week. The Cubs will have a lot of prospects to sort through between now and September, so they should get started now -- starting with a couple of familiar names in Tyler Colvin and Welington Castillo.
