Siemens recently demonstrated their new electric plane at an air conference in Paris. They had come together with EADS and Diamond Aircraft to create this beautiful eco-friendly device. There are currently some serious limitations to electric planes right now, like there are limitations to electric cars, but Siemens hopes to change up the industry with its new technology. One of the major limiting factors of Siemens' new electric plane is the battery weight. If you have ever tried holding a car battery, you know how dense these things are. Now imagine trying to lift an electric battery used in a small plane! That's how the 94 horsepower electric engine feels during takeoff and flight. As a result, Siemens' new electric plane can only fly for an hour, tops. (When the electric battery runs out of juice, a gas engine kicks in to prevent any "falling out of the sky" action.)
Well, if we can't fly in it for commercial purposes, why is this flying craft of any importance? Siemens has stated that after the release of their improved battery, which they claim is much lighter than the current version, these planes will be able to be used for flight training. Flight training sessions are not extremely long, so these vehicles will be perfect for reducing our carbon footprint. (Also, after the initial purchase, flying schools will save a ton of money on gas.) Hopefully Siemens will get working on their new product and eventually be able to apply their science to a much bigger craft - I'm looking forward to flying in 100% electric airplanes. Aren't you?
