I always heard that movie popcorn was bad for you - but WOW! It is really worse than I thought. So be careful if you plan on checking out this weekend's opener: X-Men: First Class or my picks for this month Bridemaids and Kung Fu Panda 2. A study conducted from the Center for Science in the Public Interest analyzed the calories and fat in movie popcorn. A medium combo at Regal Theatres has 1610 calories and 60 grams of saturated fat. The CSPI reminds us that this is the same amount of saturated fat as a stick of butter and the same calories of two sticks of butter. Regals says that their medium popcorn has 720 calories and the large has 960. But the CSPI lab found the their counts to be significantly off. The AMC theatre, pops their corn in coconut oil like Regal, but offers slightly smaller serving sizes. Their large popcorn has 1030 calories and 57 grams of saturated fat.
I m not a huge popcorn fan, so I can live without it. But I cannot ever imagine eating it ever again. Popcorn just isn't yummy enough for me to forego eating a great meal at my favorite Italian Restaurant. I guess it comes down to how you would rather consume your calories. Okay, I'll be honest I would rather enjoy wine and desert after a healthy dinner than walking out of Bridemaids a pant size bigger.
