While MMA training is becoming increasingly popular among pro athletes, very few amateur athletes appear to have adopted its techniques as a form of cross-training. Until now. Whitney Young High School's football team, in a very progressive move, spent a week cross-training in MMA at the Emerald Smoke MMA gym in Chicago. This appears to be one of the first high school forays into MMA training in the country and, by all accounts, it was extremely successful. The players learned grappling and striking techniques that apply in the context of football, while also learning important team building skills, all without the dangers of sparring.
The next logical step is a comprehensive out of season MMA training program which will allow the players and coaches to gauge any potential increases in performance related to MMA specific training. And then the application of MMA training to other sports like soccer, swimming, basketball, etc. Could this signal a whole new training regimen, far removed more antiquated methods? Who knows. But cheers to Whitney Young for taking a chance and opening the door for future innovation.
