I am pleased to introduce Kristine Newhall as a guest writer to The Athlete's Sports Experience. Her interest in, and experience with, Title IX issues will bring an important and unique dimension to this blog as she (from time to time) will contribute informative and timely pieces on matters pertaining to men and women in sports.
Ms. Newhall is a PhD candidate in women's studies at the University of Iowa. Her research focuses on gender and physical culture and sport. She is currently writing her dissertation on how women use gyms and establish fitness routines and practices.
She is the co-founder of the Title IX Blog, a leading resource on gender equity in education for students, lawyers, educators, coaches, administrators, and the general public.
Kristine has been on NCAA reaccreditation committees for two DI universities serving on the gender equity subcommittees. She is a member of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport.
Her scholarship has appeared in the Journal of Sport and Social Issues and in the anthology, My Life in the Gym: Feminist Perspectives on Community through the Body.
She holds a master's in Gender and Cultural Studies from Simmons College where she did her thesis on the coaching of DI intercollegiate female ice hockey players.
Additional research interests include: sporting spaces, women in recreational sports, feminist philosophy of the body, sexuality and sport, the cultural constructions of sport and femininity, female fandom, health and fitness discourse, and 20th century women's sport history and its intersection with feminism.
She is an avid cyclist, tennis player, and cross country skier; an average but enthusiastic softball player, a frustrated beginner golfer, and an indoor cycling instructor who believes a good workout is all about the music.
