Cars.jpg My youngest son's birthday falls on June 8th.  As soon as he caught wind of the fact that Pixar was releasing a sequel to their blockbuster hit "Cars", he demanded a "Cars 2" party.

Piece of cake, I thought. The Disney marketing machine was still stocking stores with merchandise from the first movie.

We bought the invitations, scouted which theater to go to, and shifted the plans into high gear.

The big day approached faster than you can say "Lightening McQueen".

With several eight and nine year old boys and girls expected to attend, we began scouring stores for car-themed goody bag items.

I noted on the invitations that parents should drop their tots off at the theater fifteen minutes prior to the movie's start time.  (Note to self - next time, factor in the 15 minutes of movie previews we were stuck watching prior to the start of the show.)

Tickets in hand, my husband and three of the boys ran into the the theater to snag seats while I waited outside for the rest to arrive.  Once we were all in, eleven children were seated together in the row immediately behind my husband and I who spent the majority of our time craning our necks to check on them throughout.

By the time the seventh preview clip started, they were yawning and beginning to curl into fetal positions. It wasn't until Woody's smile brightened the big screen that they sat up and took notice. What followed was a delightful "Toy Story" short.

It was just what the kids needed. Eyes wide, grins expectant, they sat on the edge of their seats and started watching the espionage-laced, weapons-heavy, chase-scene-savvy, pals-through-thick-and-thin story that is "Cars 2."

The multitude of new characters weaving their way the action-packed opening sequence had them riveted, but the villainous plot with dark overtones left them a tad confused.

As the plot line took us back to Radiator Springs, the story progressed nicely until it was clear that Mater would take center stage in this release.  That's when the fidgeting began. It wasn't long before the kids followed suit.

Unlike other Disney flicks, this one is long - nearly 2 hours. Even with all of the action, flashy colors and chumminess, the time did not pass quickly.  The conclusion was rife with geo-political overtones that I think are best left to Michael Moore documentaries.

And, after watching several scenes that included heavy exchanges of gunfire and one in which a character gets roughed up by two thugs in a bathroom scene, I began bracing myself for the complaint calls I was sure I'd received from parents once they asked their child, "So how'd you like it?"

As for the kids, the movie clearly didn't have them sitting on the edge of their seats for long. Nor did it have them leaping with excitement at the end.

Well, I did, but that was only because it was finally over.

Sorry Pixar - I'm giving Cars 2 a thumbs down.
