Darryl Hall and John Oates played a spirited, if brief fourteen-song set Sunday night at the Ravinia Festival.  It was a journey back to the mid seventies and early eighties for a mixture of hits and some of the pop duos personal favorites (like Las Vegas Turnaround from 1973's "Abandoned Luncheonette.")

Fortunately they are smart enough to realize the old axiom that the sum of the parts is far less than the whole.  Oates plugged his new solo record and Hall touted his web show, which is quite good.  Keyboardist/ Guitarist Hall was working especially hard to overcome the poor mix of his mic by the sound man, who was doing about as a good a job as Rex Grossman in the second half of Super Bowl XLI.

Hall & Oates at Ravinia 6/25/11

It took the first four songs to do so, and then musical party really got started.  Most of the people in the crowd on their feet dancing were women.  And I don't mean girls, but grown women, who may have been girls where tracks like "Rich Girl," "You Make My Dreams Come True," and "Your Kiss is On My List" were topping the charts.

The highlight for me was a terrific arrangement of "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do") which began with a piano solo and had and extended jam at the end. The presence of long time band member Charlie Dechant on saxophone greatly augmented the two pop stars with his inspired playing.

Chicago based band Company of Thieves opened with a Genevieve Schatz, channeling Eddie Brickell, and leading her quartet (augmented by several percussion and keyboards) through an energetic 35 minute set to open the show.
