Aaaaaah.

Let us bask in the glory of that two-word phrase we've so rarely been allowed to utter this season: Cubs win!

So Cubs wins do exist, then. Like Santa and walking, talking M&M's, I was starting to have my doubts. But Ryan Dempster went six strong innings to claim his fifth win of the season, and the Wood-Marshall-Marmol connection finished the job with the latter earning his first save since May.

The Cubs were in danger of matching their longest losing streak since 2002 had they dropped their ninth straight, and with four games in Philly coming up, it was beginning to look like they might challenge the franchise record set in 1997 when they lost their first 14 games. But instead, the Cubs finally got back in the win column and received some additional good news as Soriano, Johnson and Baker are all set to begin rehab assignments in the next few days.

The Cubs got on the board in the fourth when Carlos Pena absolutely destroyed a ball for his ninth home run of the year, one of the statistical story lines that still interests me this season; if Pena were to go on a bit of a tear, he could very quickly be among the league leaders in home runs in what has been another slow year for the long ball. Aramis Ramirez, who most certainly will not be among the league leaders this year, followed Pena with his third of the year on the very next pitch.

Only a balk by Reds reliever Jose Arredondo enabled the Cubs to tack on a late run, but Dempster and the Cubs 'pen didn't need it anyway. Dempster is now tied with Zambrano for the team lead in wins.
