A fellow I regularly exchange tweets asked me this afternoon: "What's the deal with Tyler Colvin?" My answer will take more than 140 characters, so here's a blog post!First, Colvin is getting nothing to hit, and there are a couple of reasons for that. One is, all but 11 of his at-bats this season have come from the 7-, 8-, and 9-spots, so pitchers can nibble against him because there isn't any pop behind him. Secondly, and partially as an extension of the first reason, 64% of Colvin's at-bats begin with a strike, and it's more difficult to come back from behind in the count.
Colvin is also being put in a tough spot by Kosuke Fukudome and Jim Hendry, as the team is asking Tyler to oftentimes face left-handed pitching. In 19 at-bats against lefties (almost a third of his work), Colvin has just one single, and six strikeouts.
Whether it's his fault or not, all this has translated into a .098 BABIP for Colvin. There's probably some bad luck in there, but Colvin is also having trouble squaring the ball up because of all these reasons I've mentioned thus far: bad spot in the order, frequently behind in the count, and being asked to face a lot of lefties.
I think the Cubs did the right thing by sending Colvin down to Iowa; I really think the prescription for him is a steady diet of at-bats against right-handed pitching so he can regain some confidence in his abilities. He is probably the first position player that will be sent back down to the minors, and then he'll need to hurry up and get right to merit getting called back up for Campana or Snyder.
