A few weeks after the May 10th release of her new book Lies Chelsea Handler Told Me, a startling new problem/question has arisen: Will Chelsea Handler leave the E! Network? Catherine Lawson, of AOL TV News, poses a similar question that evidences Handler's handling of her contract renewal, and the mystery surrounding her decision: "So is it any wonder that as her contract comes up for renewal over at E! there are reports that the network's desperate to keep her, and that she's feeling pretty relaxed about the whole thing?"
While Handler is estimated to make $3.5 million dollars from her show on E!, that may not be enough to coax her back.
"We'll see how it goes," Handler told "The Hollywood Reporter." "And if it works out for me to stick around here ... It may turn out that I'm done altogether. I can't keep doing the same thing, my brain is bleeding." Handler continues: ""It's a lengthy process. They tell you're valuable, and then you get a counter offer and you think, 'I guess you really don't care about me at all.' Nothing is set in stone, so if things go south, then obviously I will be moving along."
NBC, E!'s sister network, is reportedly coaxing Handler to join their ranks, but as Handler says, ""The next step for me is not 'The Tonight Show.' That's a job for Jimmy Fallon. I'm way too divisive for a show like that."
Lawson says that, "If Handler does continue to host 'Lately' she'll be making some changes: 'If 'Lately' is the show that I'm going to do, it's going to change', Handler says."
Handler is also hard at work on a sitcom, based on her past book of essays Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea, which will star That 70's Show actress Laura Prepon as Chelsea, Chelsea Handler will play her sister, and Roseanne Barr is set to play their aunt!
And, after hearing all the professional mumbo jumbo, what do you think Steven's opinion is? Well I'll tell you!
My decision is that Chelsea Handler is more than ready to leave E! and head off to bigger and better pastures.
E!, don't get me wrong, is a good network, but compared to ABC, NBC, FOX etc.. it pretty much makes its bread and butter if often-mundane celebrity news and bad movies. Handler is ready to make the jump to one of those networks.
But, that being said, she still has a long way to go towards appealing to a broad amount of the general public. Her brand of humor is very sarcastic, and the humor is often hidden under that, so the general public has taken a long while to cozy up to Handler's obviously unique brand of humor.
She is crass. She is mean. She is a ditzy blonde sometimes. She sometimes shows up on TV drunk. She belittles her co-stars and guests. All of these things can either make her endearing to a person watching her show OR it can make the viewer hate her and boycott her show. I happen to be in the faction who loves her, because her brand of humor is actually very sophisticated and can be analyzed a picked apart, rather than being just dirty, funny and broad humor that is devoid of analytical qualities.
She has also made her own right in mediums other than Television, including her bestselling books and stand-up comedy tours, which routinely sell out no matter where she is playing! Her staff, including Heather McDonald, Brad Wollack, Josh Wolf and Sarah Colonna, have even been touched by her fame and have become extremely successful in their own rights!
In the eternal equation of Television, you never know what can make a hit. Chelsea Handler has even ingredient needed to make a good Television host: charm, personality, unique beauty, and humor, but at the same time those may work against her. History has shown that unique women are not generally well-received by the general public. Joan Rivers was an extremely successful contributor to The Johnny Carson Show, but once she made the switch to her own solo show on FOX, the public turned off their TV's and her show was, sadly, cancelled.
That same scenario can be applied to the situation Chelsea Handler is facing. Handler's show is extremely successful, when applied to E!'s standards, but once she switches to a mainstream network, she may not be as lucky and her show might fail before it gets a chance to be accepted. Network TV moves a lot faster than Cable TV. If Handler had started out on NBC, I don't think she would have had the chance to gain acceptance as she did on E! and therefore would not even be in our radars right now.
I am rooting for Handler every step of the way, but she has many stairs to climb before the rest of the public is ready to accept her, like they accepted many a talk show host before her.
When Television History is analyzed in the future, the question is this:
Will Chelsea Handler be seen in the field of Johnny Carson, Ed Sullivan and David Letterman, or will she join Joan Rivers and Rosie O'Donnell in the sad failed talk show hall of shame?
