Mel Gibson spoke with children born with deformities at a hospital in Guatemala this week, a visit that was part of his community service.

The actor's publicist, Alan Nierob, said that Gibson has been in the Central American nation for days working with Mending Kids International.

Nierob said Gibson is spending more time in Guatemala than the 16 hours of community service that a plea deal calls for him to perform.

In fact, Mel has been active with the organization long before the no contest pleas to striking former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva in 2010.

He requested, and was granted, the ability to perform community service with Mending Kids International, with which he has a long history.

Mel's estranged wife, Robyn Moore Gibson, once led the charity, which offers free surgery for children with cleft lips, or spina bifida.

Gibson, who wore a purple T-shirt with Mending Kids logo, said he has been coming to Guatemala the past 15 years to support the charity.
