The bubonic plague is an illness dating back to the Middle Ages. As proof that diseases don't just disappear - it seems the plague is back in several states including Oregon, where a case was confirmed Tuesday (June 7) in a cat in Prineville, OR.

Rats and other rodents can carry the fleas which are responsible for bubonic plague. Protecting your pets from fleas is effective prevention

According to KMTR.com, a 5-year old cat, Meow, was taken to the veterinarian after his owners noticed a large absess in his lymph nodes and a high fever.

The vet sent test results to Oregon State University, and received notice that he tested positive for the bubonic plague.

Lucky on all accounts, Meow is on his way to full recovery; his owners did not get sick, though they might have gotten very sick since the plague is transmissible to people.

Symptoms for cats, dogs and people with plague are pretty much the same.

Cats get the plague from the fleas on rodents where plague typically begins. So, here's another reason why flea protection for cats (and dogs) is so important. Known as the 'black death' for killing untold thousands, antibiotics weren't originally around back in the day in the Middle Ages. So, yes, today the plague can be easily treated in people and pets. But don't count on it, since in order for treatment to work best early intervention is important (since cats are so subtle about telling us they're sick - this doesn't always occur), and sometimes people (and pets) become resistant to antibiotics.
