WATERLOO, Iowa -- Minnesota Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann's formal entrance into the 2012 GOP presidential race and her skyrocketing support in the polls already have some supporters fearful she could peak too soon or melt under six months of the glaring media spotlight.
And she had a bit of a misstep in Iowa during her two-day announcement visit.
It came Sunday as the Des Moines Register poll put Bachmann and Mitt Romney in a dead heat 10 points ahead of the pack in the leadoff caucus state, arguably making Bachmann the prohibitive frontrunner on day one of her official candidacy.
But in an interview Sunday in front of the modest home where she lived until 12 years-old when her family moved to Minnesota, Bachmann misspoke as she described her hope that Iowans see her as a native.
"I want them to know just like John Wayne is from Waterloo Iowa, that's the spirit I have too," Bachmann said. It's embracing America. It's sacrificing for America."
After that soundbite played on Fox News, fans of the late actor known as the Duke called Fox News and pointed out that John Wayne was born 150 miles away in Winterset Iowa. It was serial killer John Wayne Gacy who lived and worked in Waterloo.
Bachmann's co-frontrunner Romney is skipping the Ames straw poll and de-emphasizing the Hawkeye state while Bachmann is pinning her hopes here, recruiting aggressively for the Ames straw poll and playing up her Iowa roots.
