Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker announced 5 days ago that a catch-weight, 220 lb matchup between Fedor Emelianenko (31-3) and Dan Henderson (27-8) will happen in our great city.  On July 30th the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates will showcase these two MMA icons.  It isn't Fedor's first time at the Sear Center, in fact last time he was here I hosted his press workout event at POW! MMA.

 

This bout in the outskirts of the Windy City is the first time M-1 Global, Emelianenko's management and promotional company will do a joint venture with Zuffa.  The surprise comes in Zuffa's purchase of Strikeforce this past March.  Zuffa's desire to make any bout work with Fedor leaves me smiling, since the now MMA monopoly is not known for a forgiving nature when fighters refuse to bend to Dana White's rule. 

 

Fedor's loss to Antonio SIlva this past February where his almost flawless fight career added another loss due to a technical knock out, doesn't waiver my excitement for July 30th.  The Russian Emperor has taken a step back since his loss 3 1/2 months ago.  The Netherlands has been his honing ground to improve his fitness and even technical striking skill set.

 

Both previous Pride fighters, my personal favorite years of MMA are a good match up.  The catch weight allows Henderson to meet Fedor at a more comfortable place.  Henderson has gained a weight class before, a Pride bout against Nogueira where he lost in a decision.  A controversial loss, one I didn't agree with - but I am past it. 

 

No doubt this match up features two of the sports best and most accomplished.  Although it is not in their prime, I am eager for this MMA card.  Other fighters possibly slated for this July 30th evening are Roger Gracie vs Muhammad Lawal, Cybord Santos, Tarec Saffiedine, Ovince St. Preux.
