5 years ago, while I was training for IM Madison, while riding my bike, I managed to crack my knee cap, tear a tendon and the cartilage in my knee tore to the point where it looked like Frosted Flakes, it was a mess.

My leg was such a mess, I had to have a specific surgery called microfracture.  This is where I met Dr. Brian Cole from Midwest Orthopedics at Rush.  Not only is Cole the surgeon for the Bulls and the White Sox, he is one of the foremost experts in micro fracture type surgery.

The details of microfracture are many, but in a nut shell, they harvested my remaining cartilage and sent it off to a lab to grow me new cartilage, that they would then put back into my knee in three months time.  This was the worst case scenario.

What Cole did was fix up the knee cap, tendons and then drill hundreds of microscopic holes into the tissue around the remaining cartilage, with the hopes that it would form scar tissue and the cartilage would cannibalize this and grow new cartilage!

It sounds nuts, but it worked!  If it wasn't for Cole and this procedure, I would have been out of racing for good. Today, my knee is in perfect shape! The man knows how to put people back together again.

Now Cole has his own radio show, Sports Medicine Weekly that airs every Saturday morning at 7:00AM on ESPN 1000 and it's radio worth tuning in to.

Cole and Steve Kashul discuss sports injuries, how to treat them and more importantly how to avoid them all together.  Their guests are experts in the field of sports medicine, who also have information and tips for everyone who likes to go out and mix it up.

This is smart, informative, interesting radio, that is loaded with topics to keep you tuning in week after week: The Athlete's Parent, Fantasy Sports Injury Update, In-Depth Weekly Injury Reports and Getting Back in the Game. They also showcase special guest experts, including surgeons and trainers as well as personal accounts from athletes that have transitioned from injury-reserve back to the playing field.

Getting an appointment with one of the best doctors Chicago has to offer may take some time, but tuning in each week and sending in your questions for Cole and his experts, takes no time at all, and could help you prevent an injury.
