Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano had a meltdown.  Again.  He aimed his volcanic anger at his closing pitcher, Carlos Marmol, and his team.  He complained they played like a Triple-A club.

The Chicago Cubs lost an extra inning tie breaker 3-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals.  Marmol made a mistake in the ninth that tied the game.  He overruled his catcher and threw a slider to Ryan Theriot.  Albert Pujols then hit a homer in the tenth giving the Cubs their sixth straight loss.

"This is embarrassing. Embarrassing for the team and the owners. Embarrassing for the fans. Embarrassed -- that's the word for this team."

The only one embarrassing the team, the owners, and the fans is Carlos Zambrano.  Embarrassed- that's the word for Zam.

This is the kind of behavior he promised he would control this year.  This is the reason he went for counseling.  To control his very public temper.

Zambrano was a great pitcher for a while.  Then he had a slump.  He stunk.  No one said anything.  None of his team mates lashed out at him publicly or in private.  No one said he was an embarrassment.  No one compared him to a tyro little leaguer.

Now, he is pitching well again.  But he can't stop his gums from flapping or keep his temper in check.  If he wants to berate Marmol he should do it the right way.  Man to man, face to face, off to the side and in private.  Maybe a few punches fly.  Then they go for a beer together to commiserate.

Maybe it's time for the Cubs to pull a Milton Bradley.  Get rid of Zam.  Unlike Bradley, Zambrano is no prima donna.  He is no diva who demands special treatment.  He is a working man.  He goes out, gives his best, and wins or loses.  That's sports.

But, there is also something called sportsmanship.  Good sportsmanship.  Losing, losing streaks, and whole sewer level seasons are part of the game. It happens.  There is enough blame to go around.

Lousy owners, bad management, poor players, or just plain bad luck can ruin a team's esprit de corps.

Carlos Zambrano has always been a good winner.  He doesn't gloat over beating an opposing team.  He doesn't ridicule their mistakes or tell reporters he felt like he was playing against a little league team.  He just walks off the field with a look of defiant pride.

He has to learn how to be a good loser too.  Zambrano needs to learn their is no "I" in team.  He is not the Chicago Cubs.  The Chicago Cubs are not him.

A good loser would have simply said we did our best and it wasn't good enough today.  Then he could have gone into the privacy of the locker room.  He could have yelled, screamed, and beat a locker with his bat- can't injure the hand.

Something has to be done with Zam.  Sooner is better than later.  The season is still young.
