Irrelevant

Irrelevant.  That is Illinois State Senate President John Cullerton's description of Pat Quinn.  Cullerton may have said it, but there is a good chance most legislators on both sides of the aisle and in both chambers of the General Assembly think the same thing.

Quinn did the bare minimum.  He sent the General Assembly a budget.  He did nothing to promote it.  He did nothing to defend it.  Quinn just dithered.  Hoping against hope someone, anyone would listen to his voice crying across the prairie.  "Spend, tax borrow, borrow, spend, tax."

Quinn has no political capital in the General Assembly, except for a few phony goo goos who think he is one of them.

Incompetent, irresponsible, ineffective, and ineffectual are just as descriptive of the governor.  Quinn does not have the fiscal or political skills to save Illinois.  He does not need them.  Quinn does not want Illinois saved.  He wants it destroyed.

How does one explain his reckless abandon with the people's money?  How does one explain his kow-towing to the unions who bought and own him?  How does one explain his disastrous anti-business policies?

Like Nero, playing an instrument while watching Rome burn, Pat Quinn is wandering the streets of Springfield while Illinois is razed.  While the state is crashing all around him, the legislature is trying to hold things together.

They also exacted some revenge.  They passed bills Quinn was opposed to.  They shelved bills Quinn was in favor of.  They slashed Quinn's budget.

Quinn should have sensed something was amiss when House Speaker Mike Madigan made a pact with Republican minority leader Tom Cross.  A pact that would neutralize the governor.  If he would not act, they would.  Now the power structure is altered.  Instead of a Quinn, Madigan, Cullerton power troika, it is Madigan, Cross, and Cullerton.  Quinn has been cut off at the knees.  Ignored.  Neutered.

With Quinn wanting to spend more, tax more, and borrow more, Mike Madigan is starting to look like the fiscal conservative in the room.  The adult.  The decision maker.  Tom Cross brings the added heft for the House to do the heavy lifting.

It was a mistake to elect Pat Quinn as governor.  He barely defeated Bill Brady on irrelevant social issues and an extra push from the unions who bought him.  The people who pushed him over the top were rewarded with reckless union contracts and pay to play jobs.

In a time when the state's fiscal situation was worsening voters decided their petty wedge issues were more important.  We are now paying a very big price.  This is the case when litmus tests and wedge issues come into play during a crisis.  You get bad governance.

Pat Quinn has demonstrated he is not fit to govern.  He is irrelevant.  He made himself irrelevant.  He is now a nobody.  He took himself off the field of battle.  While Illinois goes down the tubes Pat Quinn is hiding behind his spokes-weasels.  Saying nothing.  Doing nothing.

Anthony Weiner Lawyers Up in Face of Twit Pic Scandal

Anthony Weiner has deemed a new Twitter-based scandal as nothing but a "prank," but the six-term New York Congressman has still hired a lawyer to defend himself against charges of sending a lewd photo to a 21-year old.

On Friday, the 40,000 people who follow Weiner were exposed to a photo of what appeared to be a man's crotch. (View the picture HERE.) The image was immediately deleted, before Gennette Nicole Cordova of Seattle could even view it.

Weiner says a hacker broke into his account and joked: "Touche Prof Moriarity. More Weiner Jokes for all my guests! #Hacked!"

Anthony Weiner Picture

Cordova has also chimed in on the incident, saying: "There have never been any inappropriate exchanges between Anthony Weiner and myself, including the tweet/picture in question, which had apparently been deleted before it reached me."

Is this the Democratic version of Chris Lee, a Republican Congressman who resigned in February after posting topless photos of himself on Craigs List in an attempt to solicit a woman?

Or might this actually be the work of Dan Wolfe, the BigGovernment dot com writer who claims to have broke the story, is a staunch Conservative and whose Tweets don't totally proclaim his innocence.

"I don't care," he wrote over the weekend. "Either arrest me, press charges, etc. or shut up. If there is a crime why no charges?"

While it would be a federal crime to hack a Congressman's account, Weiner says he won't pursue an arrest.

"Look, you've got the Republicans... playing games with the debt limit," he told The New York Post. "You've got a Supreme Court justice who is refusing to recuse himself despite conflicts of interest. We have a health-care act that is under siege. This is a distraction, I get it. I was hacked. It happens to people. You move on."

Chicago Condo Prices Fall To March 2000 Levels

Falling home prices.jpg

I'm running out of ways to say that home prices are falling so I'm going to have to start recycling headlines. But what's interesting about March's Case Shiller home price index numbers for Chicago is that condo prices in the city continue to fall at a much faster rate than single family home prices - despite the fact that condo prices never went up as much as single family home prices to begin with. You can see the long term trend for both price indices below.

http://blog.lucidrealty.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/Case_Shiller_Chicago10.jpgNote how prices continue to fall even further below the long term trend line for Chicago.

Single family home prices fell an additional 2.4% in March, which represents a 7.6% year over year drop, while condo prices fell another whopping 4.5% or 13.5% year over year. That means that single family homes in Chicago have now lost 34.4% of their bubble peak value and are back to April 2001 levels. On the other hand condos have lost 36.3% of their bubble value and are back to March 2000 levels.

Have An Opinion On Where Housing Prices Are Going?

Just wanted to remind you that we have a Chicago housing price forecast contest going on with $500 in prize money. The contest is a consensus forecasting project and as of the time of this post the consensus is that Chicago home prices will fall an additional 2.1% by June.

Terrelle Pryor's Phat Ride, Prospects he'll Leave Ohio State

At least five sources close to college football and the NFL have told CBS' Len Pasquarelli that the five Ohio State Buckeyes suspended for the first five games of the season are expected to at least reconsider their supplemental draft stock.

It doesn't mean it's going to happen, but a lot more options are on the table. Everyone wants to talk about Terrelle Pryor, one of the most publicized (read: extremely overrated) players in Big Ten history when it comes to the "Buckeye Five" (aw what a cute name- they're such persecuted and oppressed political prisoners), but it's Devier Posey who really has the highest NFL draft stock of the group.

The unraveling of the sweater vest changes the dynamic, and now we hear whispers that Pryor and other draft-eligible Buckeyes would leave Columbus for the supplemental draft. Of course, that whole NFL lockout thing kind of makes things even muddier.

But TPeezy2, as he's known on Twitter has other issues to deal with first. Like perhaps a gathering storm revolving around his ride. It's pretty well known that OSU players drive cars that cost well beyond their means. And there's obviously been lots of talk about "friends of the program" supplying those cars. Here's video of Pryor and his 2007 Nissan 350Z from Monday night (Sports by Brooks)

Here's more about that car, from SB:

Four hours earlier, the COLUMBUS DISPATCH reported that the NCAA was currently investigating Pryor's use of vehicles while enrolled as a football player at Ohio State - and even before he signed with the school in 2008.

The NCAA and the Ohio State University's compliance office are conducting an independent investigation of Terrelle Pryor amid allegations that the star quarterback may have received cars and other extra benefits, sources told The Dispatch today.

Pryor has been questioned by OSU compliance officials in the past, but sources said this is the most significant inquiry to date. He already has been interviewed at least once by investigators within the past few weeks, sources said.

Pryor and the cars he drives have been an issue since he arrived on campus three years ago. Pryor has been connected to more than a half dozen vehicles during his time at Ohio State, according to sources.

Tom Cross Runs out of Lies on SB35

-By Doug Ibendahl

Are you upset about Illinois redistricting? Yeah me too.

But frankly I'm a lot less upset with the Democrats for doing the same thing Republicans would have done had we been in charge. We would have drawn maps favorable to our side too. We've done it before. Republicans shouldn't kid themselves.

I'm a lot more disgusted with the awful GOP management that got us here. The new maps are the natural end result of all the rigged party conventions, endless lying to the rank-and-file, selfish misuse of the party franchise, and general unprofessionalism.

So much destruction has been done over the years by the likes of Tom Cross, Skip Saviano, Pat Brady, Randy Pollard, Andy McKenna, Judy Baar Topinka, Bob Kjellander, etc., etc., trying to prevent Republicans from voting - there was finally no party around to win the races necessary to give the GOP a seat at the map drawing table this year.

But after the blown opportunity at the polls last year, surely our officials are finally getting serious, right? Wrong.

In fact Tom Cross, Pat Brady and a few others have a brand new scam they hope will con at least a few gullible Republicans. If they can enlist even a handful of Judas goats to their side, they've got help in spreading misinformation intended to keep the rank-and-file disenfranchised and voiceless.

Sure, that means the GOP remains the minority party in Illinois with no end in sight. But guys like Tom Cross don't care. They're happy being medium sized ducks in a small pond.

The latest line from Tom Cross and Pat Brady is that we don't need Senate Bill 35 because the Illinois Republican Party has adopted what they call a "compromise."

But in fact our State GOP has done no such thing. In fact what we're witnessing is Tom Cross' most shameful lie yet. And that's truly saying something.

Here are the facts on the "compromise" that Cross, Brady and a few others want to hang their hat on.

The Illinois GOP's State Central Committee (the "SCC") held its last quarterly meeting on March 9th in Springfield.

Here is the bylaw amendment the SCC passed in secret, in closed executive session at that meeting:

"The weighted vote for vacant precincts, and precincts not represented at the county convention, shall be allocated to each candidate based on the proportion of weighted votes they received from the elected precinct committeemen." (See Article II.A.2 of the State GOP's bylaws)

Folks, do not be played for a fool. That amendment is most certainly not a "compromise." It's incumbent protection, pure and simple. In fact the 19 current State Central Committeemen have only attempted to make a bad system worse...

Cubs Week 8 awards: More mediocrity

demp.jpg

I'm so sick of the stupid Pirates.

Actually, allow me to rephrase: I'm sick of the Cubs losing to the Pirates. I can't actually bring myself to hate a team that hasn't had a winning season in about 20 years, though the Pirates could surely change course if they could just built a schedule consisting of 162 games against the Cubs.

After losing a home series to the Buccos for the second time this season, the Cubs are now 7-16 against them since late in 2009. After a great offensive stretch, the Cubs put up a total of five runs in three games. Once again, this is the Pirates we're talking about.

I'm not sure if it makes it better or worse that this year, when the Cubs lose to the Pirates, they're not losing to a team worse than their own. Yeah, that makes it worse.

Ryno of the Week: April ERA: 9.58. May ERA: 3.08. April record: 1-3. May record: 3-1. I'm talking, of course, about Ryan Dempster. Demp picked up two of the three Cubs wins last week.

Honorable mention: Carlos Zambrano, who got a win and went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI on the week.

Goat of the Week: While it was nice to see him break out of his home run slump, Aramis Ramirez had just one other hit on the week. Speaking of that home run slump, take a look at Ramirez's slugging over the last several years:

2004: .578
2005: .568
2006: .561
2007: .549
2008: .518
2009: .516
2010: .452
2011: .382

Now that's a trend. It will be interesting to see what kind of offers he gets when his contract comes up at the end of the season.

Dishonorable mention: Koyie Fucking Hill, who went 3-for-16 on the week. I'd say it's great that Soto is finally back, but his average is just .005 above Hill's.

Therapy

Therapy

I made a recent observations that all mom's need to go to therapy.

Now don't misunderstand me, I don't mean that in a negative way at all.  I myself have been to counseling and loved it! It's amazing, even if your only there, paying someone to talk about you for a whole hour its worth it.

Think back on your day, how many of your thoughts or conversations are really just about you? Some days there are admittedly more than others. But often for several days on end no one will even ask about you and then REALLY listen to your answer.

I often am having a conversation about something while thinking about someone else. Constantly on to the next topic and thought about who goes where and when. Did this happen for that thing.

And even if your married to an amazing man, like Eric Spatz sometimes you get over looked as does he, I swear that we will have a full conversation, make a plan only to have to have the same conversation again. Usually because "one" of us- we all know which "one"- wasn't listening.

And forget ever having your children ever really hear you until they are maybe in their mid-twenties. Thats when my parents were finally heard by me. I am usually sick of the sound of my own voice by the time bed time comes around. I have repeated the same four phrases all day.

Sometimes just for fun I change what I say from the usual to the completely ridiculous. So instead of saying "Please stop hitting your sister's toy." I'll say "Is it your goal today to drive me as close to the edge of insanity without pushing me over?"

Spending time talking about your deepest thoughts with someone who has no where to go and has no opinion on the topic your chatting about it so freeing. Even chatting about you most shallow of thoughts is freeing. Who said what to who or what so and so was wearing at church are all good topics to discuss.

Because no one will ever know .... Patient confidentiality-perfect!

So if we are willing to pay for manicures, pedicures, massages, lattes and facials why not pay some one to hear you, really hear you. It will be the best hour you ever spent on yourself!

Mitt Romney is Team Jacob

415026-team_jacob.jpg
The best part of a Presidential primary is watching the candidates, who for all intents and purposes are absolutely inhuman, struggle to relate to the common folk using what limited knowledge they have of popular culture. Sometimes, this involves twenty-year-old references to the early days of "hip-hop." Sometimes they managed to squeak in some Internet-gleaned language on American Idol, and sometimes, well, sometimes...

"I mean I like the Twilight series. I thought it was fun," Mitt Romney said. "I don't like vampires personally, I don't know any but you know my granddaughter was reading it and I thought, well this looks like fun so I read that."
It's good that he clarified that he doesn't "like vampires personally." I, for one, was starting to get worried for a moment.

I'm not sure this helps to lock away the coveted Millennial voting bloc. Suffice it to say, while he may not like vampires personally, Team Edward is clearly on the winning end of this deal. I mean, anyone who's read the books knows that there's essentially no competition between Mitt's clearly favored candidate, the shirtless werewolf, and his sparkly, effeminate vampire nemesis. Team Edward, while clearly inferior in pure physical attractiveness, is, in the long term, a more vulnerable and less stable relationship choice. Although, in terms of rectifying his appeal with social conservatives given his "socialistic" tendency to defend an individual health-care mandate, it becomes clear why Mitt Romney might select the more manly half-canine.

Honestly, though, I'm fairly sure he's just saying this because Edward has significantly better hair, even, than Mitt Romney, and this kind of campaign vulnerability is just too much for him to take.

I am curious, now, however, his feelings on zombies.

Race week, 13.1 Chicago edition...

131_Chi_300px2.jpg
How was the weekend? Everyone enjoy it?

My bright spot came after buying new shorts, my first new shorts since losing weight. I tweeted about it, but I've officially lost 16inches around my waist! I know I've got work to do, but that's awesome!

We had a nice weekend, my long run went alright. Yesterday's run was warm...OK it was hot! But it was still fun!

And now today, the long weekend is officially over and it's time to look ahead to this one. Hello race week!

I've had this race highlighted since last October when Coach Jen and I started looking at this year. I knew I'd run 13.1 Chicago again, as it was my first half marathon ever last June. It was also my first race solo, sans Dave. I had fun and I'm looking to repeat that this year.

The weather looks to be clear, though probably hot. I'm not going to dwell on the weather...nothing I can do about it.

I submitted my race plan to Coach Jen and Beth Shutt, my RD, and we discussed it last night. I'm ready.

After my last half, where I gave up, Jen and I talked about training mentally for upcoming races. Sunday Jen told me she wanted me to email her one reason each day why I will have a good race on Saturday. I don't think I'm going to post them though. Maybe in my race recap, but not now.

I'm really, really excited! I want to see how I run compared to last year! I'm going to run strong and have fun!

More later!

NRA Show Round-up

Last week, I got to go to the NRA show, restaurants not guns. I got more than a few odd looks from people when I mentioned where I was heading. The industry show is HUGE and showcases everything and anything you can imagine from opening a restaurant to pre-packaged foods sold in various grocery stores. You also have large name brands like Coke, Pepsi and Hormel showcasing new product and flavors. Last year, Coke rolled out their new machine that is touch-screen enabled, very cool.

This year aside from the variety of food trucks, I was surprised to see the "technology" section be as big as it was. Typically, you would see the same Point-of-Sale vendors extolling their latest version which wasn't always THAT amazing. The traditional POS is a very expensive but it hasn't impacted large change for the industry. Now it seems the software developer's innovators of the world have realized there is a better "wheel" to be made.

With the American public being comfortable with touch screen technology and the cost of that coming down considerably menus, ordering and even paying are becoming more virtual. The goal isn't to remove the server from the process but make the server better while providing some better oversight by management. The back end logistics has even improved where some of the systems can provide incredible inventory controls.

e-tab.jpg

I spoke with two companies in-depth while I was at the show. The first, e-tab is based in St. Louis, MO and about a year old. They're focusing on fast-casual chains and bars. Their "personal menu" allows you to see the food, learn more about each dish, add or subtract items, pay separately and a lot more. While the device is a bit bulky considering the sleekness of some personal computing devices, their pricing model is very competitive and if I were opening a bar something I'd consider.

The second company, DeNorma, is out of California. Run by two brothers, they've been operating as a software development firm for a number of years. The DeNorma tablet resembles an iPad but at a much cheaper cost to the restaurant. They seemed more focused on mid-size restaurants with some chains showing interest. Because of their software development background, their restaurant/hotel client is only constrained by their own imagination. They even have the possibility to incorporate social networking, video conferencing with other tables and even other restaurants using their software across the country. Dad can pay for their kid's dinner in another city - but you'll have to show some face time before.

Neither company has any clients locally yet, but I told them to let me know when they do so I can check out the process. I'm excited to see real technology that is secure, and cutting edge coming to the market. The old dinosaurs of the market better get creative or they may be gone not only because of their high cost but their lack of innovation.

Having said all of that, I think this new step in technology will cure the "dash and dine" friend from skipping out early because they have no cash. You can split the bill tableside - forcing them to FINALLY pay their way and not forget the tip and tax!

Joe Campagna is the Chicago Food Snob. A former restaurant General Manager, Server and Chef you can find him on twitter @chifoodsnob. You can reach him through email at chicagofoodsnob@hotmail.com. Joe is retained as a compensated blogger by Pei Wei Asian Diner.

Chris Brown Performs Lap Dance on Stage

Chris Brown got up in the face of another woman this weekend.

But he fortunately used his crotch instead of his fists.

The singer performed "Take You Down" at Miami’s Spring Fest: Best Of The Best concert, ripping off his shirt in the process and calling an audience member on stage for a lap dance.

Watch the video now and decide: is this female laughing out of pleasure, or to hide the utter fear she's feeling inside at being this close to Brown?

Brendon Urie: On with the Show, Broken Ankle!

If Barbara Walters can put up with Whoopi Goldberg farting on The View, Brendon Urie can overcome a silly little broken ankle.

The Panic! At The Disco singer proved he's a lot tougher than most celebrities over the weekend, as he destroyed his ankle during a gig in Florida. But did it put an end to the concert? Of course not!

Urie showed off the gruesome injury to fans and then went on with the show. Warning: the following video is graphic, like "my grandma's goiter," Urie tells the crowd.

Chivalry is ALIVE and Well!

By Yolanda (Yanni) Brown

nuttakit.jpg

Photo: Nuttakit

It's 2011, and I still believe that chivalry is alive.
While we no longer find men who throw their coats over puddles of water, or throw rocks in our windows to capture our attention, and yes, it would be nice if we still could be serenaded with love songs...but chivalry is still alive.

Before men would ask the parents before courting and wooing the women. There were six page love letters, that would linger in her mind for days.

Oh the days of courting!

We now live in a fast-pace, tech savvy social media driven society, still, chivalry is still very much alive and kicking. It just has been rebooted, reconstructed, reformed and in need of being rehabilitated. But it's definitely not dead.

In fact, I'm going on record to say that Shakespeare's sonnet's is still the reference to be used to do some serious courting.

Then compared to now may be very different but there are still examples of chivalry.
I know of one couple who sends love songs to one another via Facebook. I think that there are chivalrous men everywhere!

Based on my own experiences and observations, here are some ways I still see our beautiful men showcasing chivalrous acts.

There are still men who opens doors, will walk you to your car or to your door to make sure that you are safely inside. There are still men who pay for the first date, or at least offer. There are still men who walk on the outside of the curb, and kiss you on the cheek after a first date. There are men who still write love letters. There are guys who have a great sense of manners and would give up his jacket for you in a heartbeat! Yes, he's cold too and yes, she knows she should have brought her jacket, but the fact of the matter is that he is willing to sacrifice.

I know there are more acts of chivalry. Ladies, what else do you find chivalrous that men do nowadays?

And men, what things do you do for your lady  to show her you're living proof that chivalry isn't dead?
I would love to hear from you!

Yanni Brown

6 Awesomest Little People of Television

This list doesn't even include Gary Coleman or Emmanuel Lewis. Honestly.

And the last one is technically a movie star in the Philippines. But since you can't see him on the silver screen in this country I felt I could categorize him as a television star.

Tenacity and God's Plan

In today's Gospel (Luke 1:39-56, NAB), we start at the very beginning.  Mary goes to visit her cousin and when Elizabeth hears Mary's greeting, her own child leaps within her and she's filled with the Holy Spirit.

Elizabeth cries out, "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.  And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?  For at the moment of the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.  Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."

I'm assuming that Mary did not feel blessed at first.  Pregnant and unmarried at that time would have brought great shame to her family and even death for herself if Joseph wanted to push the issue.  But he didn't.  He accepted his role as earthly father to the Savior of the World.

Elizabeth on the other hand, has found herself pregnant after years of being childless and I often wonder if she thought about her son's role in the years to come.

I read a great devotional article about the tenacity of Mary and Elizabeth in the Catholic Women's Devotional Bible (NRSV) by Ann Spangler.  Both women stuck to their faith and accepted God's plan for them.

Do you?

RIP Chicago Conservative Icon, Tom Roeser

-By Warner Todd Huston

Over the weekend Thomas Roeser passed from us. For decades, Roeser was one of Chicago's most visible and versatile conservatives. Roeser was 82.

Roeser had a long career in politics once serving in the Nixon administration as an assistant commerce secretary. He left that position over a disagreement over his advocacy of the program meant to help minority owned small businesses.

From this point he came back to Chicago as the quintessential Republican reformer that he remained to his last days.

Roeser was a key member of the City Club of Chicago and was a long time talk radio host of WLS AM as well as a columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times. Additionally, Roeser was the publisher of the Chicago Daily Observer.

Tom Roeser was also a stalwart defender of the Catholic faith.

The Chicago Daily Observer has a round up of memorial articles.

Peas & carrots candy: adventures at the Sweets & Snack Expo

It was like coming home with a trick or treat bag full of gourmet candy loot after strolling around the Sweets & Snack Expo at McCormick Place last week with my friend Bonnie McGrath, columnist and blogger for the Chicago Journal.

Sugar. Salt. Sugar. Salt. Sugar. Salt. That's basically what our day was all about. I don't think Dr. Oz--or any doctor--for that matter,  would have approved. But I have to tell you, we had a fabulous time!

Highlights included:

Jelly Belly candies that looked like peas and carrots but tasted like orange and lime.

Dill pickle-flavored cashews.

Alpaca meat snacks.

A Chex Mix-like Chinese food-flavored snack.

Cookies 'N Cream popcorn.

Watermelon candy "fruit" slices made with real watermelon.

Chips which had the guacamole already in them.

Pork jerky that tasted like salami.

Lots of gourmet chocolate companies, including ones from Belgium, Columbia and Germany. Also hazelnut candies from Turkey and chocolate as well as other candies from Mexico which were made with goat's milk.

Chocolate-covered sunflower seeds.

Organic chocolates and candies as well as nut products were hot. And so were dark chocolate products. Maramor featured Dark Chocolate with Omega-3. Oddly, the ingredient list includes fish oil from anchovy and sardine and fish gelatin from Tilipia--although the chocolate didn't taste fishy. It was good.

Lollistraws: edible straw in apple, carmel and strawberry.

Excellent extra sharp cheddar cheese from Cabot. It's usually available at Trader Joes. Bonnie and I were also each given 32 oz. containers of their Greek-style yogurt.

Buddy Fruits. A squeezable package of blended fruit. It was sort of like apple sauce but had banana in it too. Thought it would be good when you go on a long bike ride.

Keep your &%$#ing Dog on a Leash

Running with my dog Wrigley is one of my favorite things in life. Having a large dog to run with also has the added bonus of giving me that false sense of security that bad guys will leave me alone. I like to imagine if you're a bad guy in the park looking for a target you probably won't pick the chick with the big yellow Lab, unless you have Snausages in your pocket. Or maybe just threaten to make eye contact with her and talk in that baby-talk voice, which will have her telling you my Garmin watch is worth a lot of money and that I keep a spare twenty in the key pocket of my running shorts.
In all the years I've been running, I haven't run into much trouble with people. But  other people's dogs. Those off leash dogs. The dogs whose owners let come barreling at us from out of nowhere with perhaps a wave and a shout from fifty yards away, "It's okay! Fluffy is really friendly." Don't get me started.
little running dog.jpg

A One-Biter

Once on the cement pier at North Avenue Beach, Wrigley and I were cornered by two dogs that came at us with our backs up against the frigid water.  I've asked people nicely to please leash their dog when we've gotten close. I've tried to avoid off leash dogs as best as we can.  And still, I'm the recipient of the annoyed looks.

It's human nature, I suppose, to presume that everyone is like us. And therefore it would be human nature too, to assume that other people's dogs are like ours. My dog, always on a leash, will pass within a hair's breadth of your dog on a leash without so much as even turning her head. Yeah, she's that well trained. And it took a lot of effort on my part to get her there. But when your unleashed dog comes chasing after her, watch out. She will defend herself and there's not too much I can do to stop it if you can't pull your dog off of her. This is the part of running with my dog that I hate. The part that gets my heart rate up in a manner not of my choosing.

When I reply to the, "It's okay! Fluffy is really friendly!" with a fartlek and tug of Wrigley's leash in the opposite direction of their projectile canine and the words,  "Yes, But my dog's not!" (which isn't entirely true, if both dogs were off-leash at a doggy park, they'd get along great) I get the hateful, angry stare, like, How can you bring your unfriendly dog out in public?  It makes me want to scream. And so, sometimes, I do. Depending on the size of the oncoming dog, I will scream, "My dog. Will eat. Your dog." And if that doesn't solicit a reaction, like it didn't last Thursday to the owner of the little yippy Shih tzu that took-on Wrigley, I will sometimes add, "In one bite."

"Okay, okay," came the annoyed reply, in that I'm disgusted with you because I'm breaking the law tone of voice.

Seriously. Sometimes it all makes me want to scream. And just let my dog eat your dog. In one bite.

Top 10 Things to Ask Your Lawyer

Most of these are best asked in the initial stages, before you agree to hire a particular attorney. We recommend treating initial meetings or consultations like an interview. You undoubtedly have a lot of questions about your legal issue, but don't forget to ask the attorney about their practice, experience, fees, etc., as well

When considering hiring an attorney, you might want to ask:

1.       What areas of law do you practice? If you ask this question and the attorney lists more than a couple areas of law, it raises a red flag about their experience in the area you need. If they handle every case that comes through the door, it's less likely that they have significant experience in any one area.

2.       How long have you been practicing? There is no magic number, but generally more experience is better. Seven to 10 years is a good benchmark.

3.       Have you had a case similar to mine in the past?  In larger areas of law, like personal injury, it might matter whether the attorney has experience in your specific type of case. For example, if you were injured by a defective product, ask if they've handled product liability cases before.

4.       How often do you appear in the court where my case will be heard? Familiarity with the law is important, but so is familiarity with the people who make the decisions. An attorney who knows local judges, prosecutors, clerks and other attorneys, is in a better position (in our opinion) to get a good outcome.

5.       Could you outline the process for this type of case? Each case is different, but there are usually some general steps that can be explained or outlined. Your attorney should be willing to answer questions like this and not just blow them off.

6.       What is your fee? Obviously, you'll want to know how much they charge. But be sure to ask follow up questions, as well. It's a good time to understand how their fee works, whether they require a retainer, etc. Ask to look at their fee agreement so you can ask any questions you might have before it's time to sign.

7.       How often can I expect to hear from you during my case? Attorneys should keep clients informed of major developments in their cases. Some attorneys will touch base every so often even if there haven't been any developments. Ask what you can expect.

8.       What is the best way to get in touch if I have questions or concerns? Communication is a common complaint from clients. Try to avoid frustration by asking the best way to keep in touch. Also, don't be afraid to ask about their policy on returning client calls and emails. You shouldn't have to wait a week or more to hear back.

9.       Will you be handling my case, or will it be someone else in your office? Sometimes, experienced attorneys pass their cases off on new associates in the firm. You should know who is working on your case. And you should make sure you're not paying a high hourly rate when someone at a lower rate is actually doing the work.

10.   Do you enjoy your job? This may seem like a strange question. You don't have to actually ask, but try and get a sense of the attorney's level of interest or enthusiasm. Do you feel like they actually care? It's subjective, but important. A lot of attorneys get burned out after a while, and it can definitely affect their work.

Like most things, it's good to get a couple of opinions if you have the time. Most attorneys offer initial consultations at no cost.
