Cubs Week 8 awards: More mediocrity

I'm so sick of the stupid Pirates.

Actually, allow me to rephrase: I'm sick of the Cubs losing to the Pirates. I can't actually bring myself to hate a team that hasn't had a winning season in about 20 years, though the Pirates could surely change course if they could just built a schedule consisting of 162 games against the Cubs.

After losing a home series to the Buccos for the second time this season, the Cubs are now 7-16 against them since late in 2009. After a great offensive stretch, the Cubs put up a total of five runs in three games. Once again, this is the Pirates we're talking about.

I'm not sure if it makes it better or worse that this year, when the Cubs lose to the Pirates, they're not losing to a team worse than their own. Yeah, that makes it worse.

Ryno of the Week: April ERA: 9.58. May ERA: 3.08. April record: 1-3. May record: 3-1. I'm talking, of course, about Ryan Dempster. Demp picked up two of the three Cubs wins last week.

Honorable mention: Carlos Zambrano, who got a win and went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI on the week.

Goat of the Week: While it was nice to see him break out of his home run slump, Aramis Ramirez had just one other hit on the week. Speaking of that home run slump, take a look at Ramirez's slugging over the last several years:

2004: .578
2005: .568
2006: .561
2007: .549
2008: .518
2009: .516
2010: .452
2011: .382

Now that's a trend. It will be interesting to see what kind of offers he gets when his contract comes up at the end of the season.

Dishonorable mention: Koyie Fucking Hill, who went 3-for-16 on the week. I'd say it's great that Soto is finally back, but his average is just .005 above Hill's.
