Family Reunited in Joplin

In Joplin, MO Jeremy Williams said that his family's two-story home was literally blown away, though that wasn't his most major concern. True most of the family survived the 200 mile-per-hour winds - and without injury - except for one. One family member remained missing until May 26, the family dog, Betty.

A registered nurse from Carbondale,IL, had found Betty under what had once been the Williams' home -- hungry and a bit dehydrated, but otherwise in good shape.

Williams reunited with his dog, and it was difficult to tell who was more overjoyed.

More people died in last Sunday night's tornado in Joplin than any other such event since modern record-keeping began 61 years ago. And the impact on the southwest Missouri city's animal population has been devastating as well. While no statistics have been released on the number of dogs, cats and other creatures killed, the Joplin Humane Society has taken in close to 400 live animals affected by the crisis, according to executive director Karen Aquino. Some of those suffered injuries -- from scratches to broken bones that required amputations -- while others were picked up by search-and-rescue teams scouring the city looking for signs of life.

The Lance family, with two young children, who'd been away when the tornado rolled through and destroyed their home.. Their dog -- a chocolate Labrador named Samson -- was blown away and landed in a storm culvert. It was there that rescuers found him, his toenails essentially filed away as he desperately tried to stay above water.

While greatly citizens of Joplin and the community have come together, there are reports of people attempting to make off with other family's animals, another reason why microchipping is so important. A 'bad guy' can remove a dog tag on a collar - a microchip linked to the true owners, can not be removed.  Cats, in particular, a far less likely to be reunited without a chip. In emergencies, and when space is at a premium, cats without an ID may become relocated to another facility, and the true owners may never catch up.
